A big fat fellow with joined up eyebrows and a crazy beard shouting a lot seems an unlikely source of great comedy but, hey, this is Turkish cinema.
Judging from the reaction of the audience at Wood Green Cineworld on Thursday, there is no doubt that Sahan Gokbakar is very popular.
And I am delighted to report that, having watched Recep Ivedik 4, I can see why.
Writer Gokbakar, whose brother Togan directs this film, stars as the aggressive buffoon who, despite his politically incorrect antics, wins hearts because of his generous spirit.
This stretches particularly to children who he trains to play football in his home town.
Thus, when a major industrialist purchases their pitch for development, he steps in to try to buy it back.
His task looks hopeless until he sees an advertisement for the Turkish version of the island game show 'Survivor'.
This gives him a chance of a winner-takes-all pot which would provide enough money to save the day.
It is also when Recep Ivedik 4's fun really begins.
The movie had two key factors on its side: firstly, the gags are mainly physical so were not lost in translation and, secondly, there are so many of them that some are bound to hit the mark.
I wasn't even sure how it happened but, along the way I, like those in a decent-sized audience, were roped in by Gokbakar's antics.
There is nothing remotely subtle about the humour but it, like Eyvaah Eyvah 3, a couple of weeks ago, won me over.
