4 STARS of WTF! Why the hell am I giving this such a high rating?? What is wrong with me? This book was a mess! It was painful, it was disjointed, sometimes the characters make no sense and the stupidity makes you want to bash your head repeatedly into a brick wall. But still there is something, something there that makes this WTF, OTT soap opera melodwama damn entertaining. Hell if I know what it is but well it got me. I was glued to the damn thing in the final pages wondering just where Mrs. Hagan was going to take us next - and well - it was crazy, it was intense and it fitted the Coltranes to a T.So first off - if you haven't read the other books in the series - stop - go search them down and read them. Yes you can jump into this in the middle (Hagan does enough back tracking so it makes sense) but it would be much more enjoyable if you ride the WTF train for the entire journey. Now on to the spoiler-ish sort of stuff - no I'm really not spoiling it because hell if you read the back cover copy - the asshole who wrote it gives most of the mysteries away. If you want to be truly surprised, then rip the cover off and quite reading the review.
So now we start off two years after the last book (this being book three in the series) - Kitty and Travis are still on her piece of shit land and once again, they are dirt poor. She gave all the land, possessions and money away because Corey ( the ebil villain of the last book was an asshole). She's not happy, Travis isn't happy - neither is happy being a farmer but neither will admit it. She comes up with the stupidest, most lame brained plan ever to "drive" Travis away and let him indulge in his wanderlust figuring that if you "really love something you should set it free." Instead of treating him like an intelligent man, she treats him like some stupid animal and even though every one around her tells her this whole thing is stupid - she still does it. This part of the book made me hate it, made me want to throttle Kitty and throw the thing against the wall. Patience will be needed to get through this part - endure dear friend because it does get better.
Second part - Travis leaves, thinks Kitty is a bitch and goes to Haiti. Lots of stupid voodoo shit happens that just doesn't seem to fit with the rest of the book - again resist throwing the book against the wall and just continue through the pain. Hey who said reading Bodice Rippers would be a walk in the park - no it's not - true fans know when to bite the bullet and just accept their character's dumb ass actions.
Third part - finally something real, something compelling and some good ass characters come into play. Okay Nancy (AKA spawn of Satan) has teamed up with Luke (AKA dumb ass bad guy with yellow teeth) and they have kidnapped Kitty. Luke takes her to Nevada and promptly she goes insane and dies - not really a spoiler (see stupid ass back cover copy writer). Travis is distraught and wants to kick himself in the ass for well being an ass. He goes to Virginia with Sam on a new job. Here the book almost feels like a different book. Travis and Sam start to battle the KKK and help the black people. Here he meets two hot sisters and the sparks fly. This is the part that actually makes the book and the climax is so crazy, well it's worth the price of admission.
The ending is also a WTF, Coltrane crazy ride from hell and it will all finish with you wondering what the hell is going to happen next - damn you Hagan - now no matter how I felt while reading this, I have to read the next one.
Yes I'm stuck, stuck in the crazy series downward spiral of Bodice Ripper hell. Off I go to read more. This one while being the weakest of the series so far still had enough oomph in the end to make me bump her up a star. Only 4 for the horrible stupid ass Kitty plan and the obvious errors that I discovered in the beginning (I mean come on - you wrote this shit, I shouldn't be able to find errors). DON'T, I repeat, DON'T jump in and read this one first - go back to the first book and read them in order. Otherwise you will wonder what the hell you got yourself into and you will track me down and throw eggs at my head.
